Project Goal:

Rooted in the hope of creating a more equitable society and respond to the housing crisis in South Texas colonias, the United Farm Workers of America, Texas Rural Legal Aid, and the Texas Low Income Housing Information Service came together in 1991 and organized Proyecto Azteca. The goal is to build healthy and thriving communities by assisting low and very low income families, and empower them to become responsible home owners with an enhanced quality of life. In the first year, Proyecto Azteca organized construction with just four families. Over the years, Proyecto Azteca has gradually increased its production rate to 35 to 60 homes per year. Providing families with quality affordable home ownership opportunities. Today, Proyecto Azteca is a nationally recognized, community directed, self-help housing organization that has financed and trained more than 600 families in the construction and first time homeownership in over 50 Hidalgo County colonias.

In December 2011, Proyecto Azteca will break ground on the first neighborhood in South Texas where all 36 homes will seek LEED Silver certification. The neighborhood in Edouch will be a sustainable neighborhood with hike and bike trails, a community center and park, single family homes for diverse families and families of mixed income. “We look forward to single parent families, two parent families, families with disabilities and special needs, and veterans living here,”said Saul Villarreal, Assistant Executive Director. “Ït will be a diverse neighborhood.”
